Top Ghanaian politicians have taken to social media to mourn with Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, following the death of his mother, Hajia Mariama Bawumia.
Hajia Mariama who was also the wife of founding member of the Northern People’s Party, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia died today in Accra, two days before her 82nd birthday.
Confirming the sad news earlier on Monday, Dr Bawumia posted on Facebook that , “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Hajia Mariama Bawumia.”
Hajia Mariama had been unwell for some time and was hospitalised.
The Kpasenkpe native, was one of the first northern female students to have gained admission into the Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast, in the Central Region.
There have been numerous tributes and messages of condolence since the death of Hajia Mariama was announced.
President Akufo-Addo prayed for strength for Dr Bawumia and his family “in these very difficult times”.
“On behalf of my wife, Rebecca, my family, the Government, and the people of Ghana, I convey deep sympathies to the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on the sad loss of his mother, Hajia Mariama Bawumia. I pray for strength for him and his family in these very difficult times. May Allah grant her soul eternal rest and the highest level of Jannah” he posted on Facebook.
Former President John Dramani Mahama also took to his Facebook page to mourn with his “brother”, saying that he had spoken to him over the phone.
“I just got off the phone with my brother, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to console him and the entire family on the loss of their mother, Hajia Mariama Bawumia earlier this morning. May Allah grant her a peaceful rest.”
Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng, Trades and Industry Minister and NPP Flagbearer hopeful took to his Twitter handle to commiserate with the Vice President.
“I have learnt of the passing of Hajia Mariama Bawumia, mother of H.E Alhaji @MBawumia, Vice President of the Republic. My wife, Patricia & l extend our deep sympathies to Dr. Bawumia, his wife Samira & rest of the family. May Hajia Mariama’s soul rest in the peace of Allah” he tweeted.
The remains of Hajia Mariama will be flown from Accra to Walewale where she will be buried in accordance with Islamic tradition.
