The Northern Regional Police Command has impounded 348 unregistered motorbikes and tricycles in the Tamale Metropolis.
The arrests were made on Monday in a joint operation with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC).
285 of the motorbikes impounded were unregistered, four engine powered tricycles while 59 offenders arrested were riding without crash helmet.
Briefing the media after the exercise, COP Yoosa Bonga, the Northern Regional Police Commander said the exercise was to rid the city of criminals.
According to the Police Commander, criminals, especially armed robbers now use unregistered motorbikes for their criminal operations in the Northern Region, hence the need to get all good citizens to register their motorbikes.
“We are enforcing the law because the regulation is that, before you put your motor or your vehicle on the road, it must be registered. If it is a motorbike, you need a [crash] helmet, so that in case of an accident, at least you’re in a way protected” COP Yoosa Bonga added.
