News Editor of Tamale based Zaa Radio, Saani Mohammed Lukman has called for the immediate arrest of Assembly Member for Warizehi in the Tamale Metropolis for openly disclosing that he and other Assembly Members took bribe before confirming Sule Salifu as the Mayor of Tamale.
Mr. Lukman told Super Morning Show Host, Mumuni Yirifa Yunus on Monday that accepting bribe is as bad as giving bribe, and that the assembly member should be arrested to help in investigations.
On Friday, September 30th, Hon. Sofowan, an Assembly Member for Warizehi Electoral Area revealed in a live interview with a local radio station that all Tamale Metro Assembly members took a bribe of Ghc3000 from Sule Salifu to confirm him as Tamale mayor.
According to the prominent journalist, the open admission of taking bribes is reason enough for the assembly member to resign immediately.
“Where the rule of law is followed, he should not be a member of the assembly by now. He should be apprehended by police in order to provide more evidence concerning the bribery scandal” he said.
The new Tamale Mayor has however denied the allegation that he bribed assembly members to confirm him as the Metropolitan Chief Executive.
He told Mohammed Mutaru Alhassan on Radio Justice’s weekend one on one political programme, The Northern Eye such allegations were unfounded and should therefore be disregarded.
Sule Salifu was nominated as Tamale’s mayor by Ghana’s president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo through a joint conference of the Local Government Ministry and the Information Ministry on September, 19th 2021.
Sule Salifu on 30th September, 2021 received 40 YES votes, 17 NO votes, and 2 rejected votes out of a total of 59 votes cast to be approved as the mayor of the Tamale metropolis.
