Leading Ghanaian development and commercial bank, Agricultural Development Bank (adb) has presented a cheque of Gh¢50, 000 to the newly opened Tolon District Hospital to aid in its operations.

The donation is part of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

It is expected to ease the pressure on the nearly two week old hospital which is in dire need of financial support to ensure its smooth running.

Despite its commissioning in November 2020, its operationalization delayed for more than a year.

The Tolon District Hospital was finally opened on January 4, 2022 to provide first class medical services to residents of the Tolon District and other adjoining districts including the Kumbungu district of the Northern Region and the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

However, Tolon District Director of Health Services, Joana Quarcoo said the young hospital is currently lacking human and logistical resources to function effectively.

According to her, more health personnel are needed to ensure the full functioning of the various units of the facility.

She added that the unavailability of a hospital pick up vehicle compels them to use the Tolon District Ambulance to transport their consumables from the Central Medical Stores in Tamale to the facility.

Madam Joana said lack of accommodation, fuel to power the hospital’s generator among others are major challenges hindering the smooth running of the hospital.

She was however optimistic that the future of the hospital would be bright, saying that they will work to make the hospital a center of excellence.

Despite the challenges, the hospital has been a success story thus far, says Dr Baba Abukari Braimah, a Deputy Northern Regional Director of Health Services.

He said the hospital since its operationalization on January 4, has provided health care to at least 250 and has already done 20 deliveries of babies.

Dr Braimah said the facility has been assigned a dentist, adding that more staff will be recruited in the coming months.

Presenting the cheque at a short ceremony at the Tolon District Hospital on Saturday January 15, Deputy Managing Director of the adb, Alhaji Alhassan Yakubu Tali said the donation was to help in the smooth running of the facility.

“Today, we are here to make a cash donation of Gh¢5,000 as further contribution to support the smooth operations of the hospital and helping to provide medical care to communities that visit the facility” he said.

The Deputy MD noted that the bank has in the recent past supported the hospital with Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and also constructed a borehole in the district to provide potable drinking water for the people of the district.

Alhaji Alhassan challenged corporate institutions to continue to support development programs of institutions and communities in need.

Member of Parliament for Tolon, Mohammed Habib Iddrisu who had earlier supported the hospital with a seed capital of Gh¢60,000 pledged to install street lights across the hospital and provide the facility with a borehole to ease the water challenges it is faced with.
