President Nana Akufo-Addo has arrived in Guinea to hold talks with Guinean Coup leader, Col Mamady Doumbouya.
President Akufo-Addo who is the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) arrived in the capital Conakry on Friday alongside Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara.
The ECOWAS leaders are expected to deliver the decisions of the commission to the military junta and hold further diplomatic talks.
The Ghanaian President is expected to reiterate ECOWAS’ demands for the deposed Guinean President, Alpha Conde to be released unconditionally.
“I am currently in Conakry, capital of Guinea, in my capacity as Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State of ECOWAS, together with the President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, His Excellency Alassane Ouattara, to hold talks with the military leadership in Guinea, led by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, centering largely on the fate of President Alpha Condé, amongst others.” President Akufo-Addo posted on Facebook after his arrival.
On Thursday, ECOWAS at an extraordinary summit held in Accra placed a travel ban on the Guinea coup leaders and their families and froze all their assets.
The regional bloc also called for the immediate release of Mr Condé. “In six months elections should be held,” said ECOWAS Commission President Jean-Claude Kassi Brou at a briefing.President Condé was toppled on September 5 by Col Mamady who is the head of the country’s Special Forces.
The 83 year old Guinean President was arrested by the coup plotters same day and has since not been released.
