Former President John Mahama says President Nana Akufo-Addo has abandoned his promise of using the ‘Anas Principle’ in the fight against corruption in his government.

According to him, even though the fight against corruption was a key campaign message of the then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016, he has failed in the fight against the canker.

“It was the central plank of Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign in 2016 and that was his major instrument of dealing with corruption, apart from in the debate where he said he will use the Anas’ principle, as for the Anas Principle, he has abandoned it” the former President who was also the NDC’s 2020 Presidential Candidate said in a radio interview in Tamale on Thursday.

The President in 2016 had pledged to adopt the style of journalism practiced by ace Investigative Journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas in dealing decisively with corruption.

The principle used by the investigative journalist is to name and shame persons caught in his investigations engaging in corruption.

However, Mr Mahama said the President has done nothing close to what he promised.

He said the Office of the Special Prosecutor was the only instrument left for the President in the fight against corruption, however, Mr Mahama noted that interference in the work of the First Special Prosecutor has rendered the office almost useless.

“The Special Prosecutor is the only instrument in dealing with corruption. Unfortunately, the first Special Prosecutor did not get the kind of cooperation he needed to be able to do the work that he had been given. We heard him complain about funding of the office in terms of logistics in terms of finance to recruit the kind of personnel he needed to do the job. But since then we’ve also heard many complaints where the executive an the political establishment had attempted to interfere in his job. The duty of the Special Prosecutor is the independence of the office and his ability to investigate corruption, not withstanding whose ox is gored, when you take that independence away, it robs the office off its usefulness” Mr Mahama claimed.

Former President John Mahama is on a tour of the Northern Region to thank the Chiefs and people of the region for their support before, during and after the 2020 General Elections.

Mr Mahama paid a courtesy call on the King of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II before paying courtesy calls on other prominent chiefs in the region.
