Haruna Iddrisu, the minority leader in parliament, has revealed that the Akufo-Addo administration is hoping for debt forgiveness after emptying the state coffers.
According to him, the government is now concentrating on seeking relief from multilateral organizations and bilateral partners to whom the country owes money.
He stated that the government could not make demands for additional funds in the mid-year budget review presented by finance minister Ken Ofori Atta on July 29, 2021, because there is no money in the public purse.
“I am very confident that the minister hope and the hope of the president now is debt relief and debt forgiveness. You don’t drink water from an empty calabash, so we can understand why he is not here to ask for money” the Tamale South law maker claimed.
The legislator was addressing the house of parliament after the finance minister presented the mid-year budget review statement.
ln accordance with Section 28 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921) the Minister for Finance is expected to present the Mid-year Review to Parliament not later than 31st July of each financial year. This year’s presentation to Parliament happened on Thursday 29th July, 2021.
