The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has threatened sanctions against Guinea’s coup leaders.
The Regional bloc, chaired by President Akufo-Addo condemned the military take over of the country and is demanding the immediate release of President Alpha Conde.
The 83 year old Guinean President was arrested on Sunday by the coup plotters, led by Commander of the country’s Special Forces, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.
Col Mamady appeared on national television in Guinea, claiming to have dissolved President Alpha Condé’s government.
The presidential guard, according to the defence ministry, thwarted the attempted takeover.
This comes after hours of heavy gunfire near the presidential palace in Conakry, the capital.
Hours after the attempted take over, ECOWAS demanded for the release of the president and all persons arrested in relation to the coup.
“ECOWAS demands respect for the physical integrity of the President of the Republic, the Professor Alpha Condé and his immediate and unconditional release as well as that of all the personalities arrested”.
Ghana’s President stated in a strong worded statement issued Sunday evening.
The statement also demanded the return to constitutional order in the country.
” ECOWAS reaffirms its disapproval of any unconstitutional political change” the statement stated.
