The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akufo Dampare has arrived in Tamale in the Northern Region to visit three police officers who were critically injured in a fatal accident that killed two others Thursday evening.
The accident occurred on the Walewale-Bolgatanga road in the North East Region.
The three officers were referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital after they were initially admitted to the Walewale Government Hospital.
The five officers were members of the Anti-robbery Squad of the Ghana Police Service who were responding to an emergency on the Walewale-Bolgatanga highway.
A statement signed by ACP Kwesi Ofori, Acting Director General in charge of Public Relations said “the members of the Police Management Board have also visited the families of the two officers who passed on to commiserate with them”.
It said plans we underway to airlift the injured officers to Accra for further treatment.
The Walewale-Bolgatanga highway has become notorious for highway robberies, prompting the police to intensify patrols on that stretch.
The accident is seen as a huge blow to the fight against armed robberies along that stretch of the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway.
