Veteran Broadcaster, Alhaji Alhassan Salifu Kalaala has opined that more than 70 percent of media practitioners in Tamale in the Northern Region are not paid by their employers.
According to him, this is compelling media practitioners to do the bidding of politicians just to make a living.
The situation he noted has affected the professionalism of most media persons in the Northern Region.
“You cannot blame them [media practitioners] , about 70 percent of them are not paid, so they are forced to follow politicians because they have to survive” Alhaji Kalaala claimed.
The former General Manager of Radio Justice was speaking at the official launch of Tamale based Dagbon FM, a subsidiary of Class Media Group (CMG) on Wednesday.
He however urged media practitioners to uphold the highest journalistic standards, despite the challenges, saying that “You will definitely reap the seed of your labour, no matter how bad things may be today”.
Alhaji Kalaala challenged managers of Dagbon FM to ensure their staff are paid their monthly salaries, this he added will motivate them to give off their best.
He also urged media managers in the region to ensure they pay their staff well.
Channel Manager of Dagbon FM, Alhaji Abdul Rashid Bawah hinted the radio station had come to change media standards in the region.
He pledged their commitment to designing programmes that will not only educate, inform and entertain its audience but to also project the positive image of Dagbon and promote socio-economic development.
Alhaji Rashid who is also known as BBC said as the name suggests, Dagbon FM is for the chiefs and people of the Dagbon Kingdom, hence the need for Dagbon people to embrace it as their own.
The Class Media Group presented 25 sewing machines to orphans in selected areas in the greater Tamale Metropolitan area as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
