The Governing Council of the University for Development Studies (UDS) has ratified the appointment of Prof Seidu Alhassan as the Vice Chancellor of the University despite attempts by a former student of the University to stall the process with a court injunction.
The Ghana News Agency reported that a motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction was filed at the High Court in Tamale to restrain the University for Development Studies (UDS), its Council Chairman, and Registrar from announcing Professor Seidu Al-Hassan as the new vice-chancellor of UDS.
The motion, according to the report was filed on Thursday, June 09, by Victor Kodjoga Adawudu, Counsel for Emmanuel Osabutey, a former student of UDS, who is the plaintiff.
The motion, was also praying the court for an order of interlocutory injunction restraining Professor Seidu Al-Hassan from holding himself as the new Vice-Chancellor of UDS until the final determination of the matter by the court.
It is also praying the court for an order restraining the UDS, Professor Wayo Seini, UDS Council Chairman, and the University Council from ratifying and approving Professor Seidu Al-Hassan as the new Vice-Chancellor of UDS until the Search Committee’s Report was discussed and approved by the Members of the University Council in accordance with the law.
However, the University Council in a unanimous decision, approved the appointment of Prof Seidu Alhassan at a Council meeting in Tamale on Thursday, Justicefmonline’s checks revealed.
Justicefmonline’s checks at the university revealed that the University Registrar who is a member of the Council had not been served the writ before or during the council meeting.
Sources disclosed that the Council had already approved Prof Seidu’s appointment before the motion went viral on social media.
“Council members had already ratified Prof [Seidu] before we saw the motion being circulated on social media. In fact, the Registrar said he had not been served with any writ of injunction” the source said.
There has been heightened tension over the appointment of Prof Seidu Alhassan, whose supporters claim that some persons within the university council were trying to overturn his appointment in favour of Prof Felix K Abagale, the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University.
Meanwhile, the University has announced the appointment of Prof Seidu as its new Vice Chancellor.
A statement issued a while ago and signed by the Registrar, Nurudeen-Issah Abubakar said “It is announced for the information of the University for Development Studies Comminity, and other stakeholders of the University that, the UDS Governing Council, at an Emergency Meeting held on Thursday 9th June, 2022, approved Prof Seidu Al-Hassan as Vice Chancellor.”
“The Governing Council discussed and approved the Report of the Select Committee for the position of Vice Chancellor, which proposed the names of Prof Seidu Al-Hassan and Prof Felix Kofi Abagale for consideration and appointment, in accordance with Statute 8, subsection 8, 10 of the UDS Statutes” it added.
