Zaachi Youth Association, an association of youth chiefs in the Dagbon Kingdom have warned that they will resist any attempt by some faceless individuals to thwart the processes to complete the appointment of Prof Seidu Alhassan as the Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS).
The association also warned that it will resist attempts by same individuals to frustrate the tenure of the Former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University when he takes over as VC in September.
The youth chiefs expressed their disappointment at some members of the University’s Council, accusing them of plotting to overturn Prof Seidu’s appointment.
“We also have in our possession a letter signed by Prof. Francis Kweku Amagloh, a member of the university council requesting a special meeting to appoint a new VC. This suggest that, he and many others are not in favour of the appointment of Prof Seidu Al-hassan and sought to convey a special council meeting to appoint their preferred candidate.
The nature of signatories on the request letter speaks volumes and we want to assure them that we are far ahead of their back door machinations.” the Zaachi Youth Association said in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Dakpem-Diema Naa, Seidu Shagbaa and Secretary, Yakubu Andani on Monday.
Last week, Justicefmonline reported exclusively that barring any last minute changes, Prof Seidu was set to be appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the premier University in Northern Ghana and would take over in September when the tenure of Prof Gabriel Ayum Teye retires in September.
The University in a statement issued by its Registrar denied his appointment.
Since then, there has been heightened tension over the appointment of Prof Seidu Alhassan, whose supporters claim that some persons within the university council are trying to overturn his appointment in favour of Prof Felix K Abagale, the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University.
Justicefmonline has not been able to independently verify that.
On Sunday, the King and Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari II congratulated Prof Seidu Alhassan for his new appointment, saying that it did not come to him as a surprise.
Other prominent members of the region, including the Paramount Chief of the Saboba Traditional Area, the Uchabobor have since congratulated the new VC.
The Youth chiefs while congratulating Prof Seidu, called on the outgoing Vice Chancellor to set up a committee to investigate how the appointment letter of Prof Seidu was leaked to the media, demanding an unqualified apology for the leaking of the letter which they said was a “classified document”.
“We also want to request the current V.C, Prof Gabriel Ayum Teye to setup a committee to investigate how Prof Seidu Alhassan’s appointment leaked from his office to the media space. We find this as unfortunate and a deliberate attempt to ridicule this hard-earned appointment. We demand an unqualified apology from the UDS management, most especially the VC for deliberately leaking this classified document (the appointment letter).” They noted.
The University has not commented on the matter again.
